NOW with two age groups! Mondays 3-4pm May 9- June 13 for ages 6-8 and Thursdays 3-4:30pm May 12- June 16 for ages 9-12. Please note that the youth must have a bike with both front and back hand breaks, no back pedal break and no BMX style bikes. This program is for children who already ride two wheels on pavement with confidence and want to start riding on trails! Each week we will spend time working on new skills specific to mountain biking before heading out for a ride. Kids will learn about proper body position, how to safely use both brakes, how to ride over roots and rocks, and so much more! All while being outside, getting exercise, and most importantly, having fun! During our sessions together, the goal is to build confidence on the bike while exploring local trails and creating a great opportunity for some fun, local bike adventures.

Fresh Air Fitness

Our community is connected to nature, and we are lucky to have so much access to the outdoors especially in a time when outdoor space may just be the healthiest way to stay healthy. The Lighthouse Country Regional Trail is a great way to get outside and stay active and now we have a new way to stay fit on the trail. Fresh Air Fitness is a new program brought to you by the RDN. Consisting of 8 stations along the trail, this is a self-guided fitness workout for the whole body that can be incorporated into your daily walks. Each station has signage posted and pictures that are easy to follow. Be sure to check this out, give it a try, and let the RDN or Lighthouse Recreation know what you think. This is a pilot project that can be adjusted to community needs. Coming Soon, Fresh Air Fitness in the palm of your hand. Yes, stay tuned for a digital version of this program that you can take on any trail!

Henry Morgan Pump Track, Spring Tune Up

In June we celebrate National Bike Month and BC Trails Day. What better way to share the celebration with a volunteer work party to help tune up the Henry Morgan Pump Track in Bowser. A big thanks to our friends at the Regional District of Nanaimo and the Outdoor Recreation Council of BC for helping with machine labor and funding to tune up this track. First we build, then we Ride!

June 5 10am-2pm – 95 Henry Morgan Drive

Located in Bowser, this natural park has a swing, slide, shelter, and basketball hoop all while being surrounded by natural elements like landscaped grasses, stone, chip, grass, and forest. It also has a pump track! A pump track is a circuit of rollers and banked corners specific for bikes. The idea is to make it around the circuit with minimal pedaling or breaking. This is an accessible feature that can be used by anyone from tots on balance bikes to the Grandparents of the family.
